THE CERAMICS
Russell Martin Ceramics is a showcase of hand-built sgraffito pots inspired by the rugged beauty and folklore of Cornwall.
Visitors to this site are invited to explore the portfolio, where a selection of pieces are displayed. Russell's primary technique, sgraffito, allows him to carve detailed designs into clay, revealing contrasting layers beneath. This technique involves a meticulous process that captures the delicate interplay between light and shadow. It's a process that requires patience and precision but is incredibly rewarding when you see the final image emerge.

MEET THE ARTIST
RUSSELL MARTIN
Originally from the West Country, Russell attended Portsmouth University to study illustration and spent several years illustrating children’s books.
Later, he took up a post as an art teacher in the coastal seaside town Hornsea, East Yorkshire, a job he greatly enjoyed for 22 years. Alongside teaching, Russell continued to create paintings and lino prints.
Here he met his wife and together they started exploring Cornwall on family holidays, with the dream to one day move there permanently.
This dream became a reality in 2021 when Russell and his family moved to the Little Apple House in Duloe, where he started creating Cornwall-inspired ceramics from the art studio in their garden.
